History of Sonic the Hedgehog

In the 90′s there was a console war between Nintendo and Sega, Nintendo quickly realised that having their own mascot would be a great way to control and generate sales and interest from consumers – thus Nintendo created the Super Mario Brothers. Sega were quick to follow suite and they created the lovable Sonic the Hedgehog – a rival to Nintendo’s characters.

Sonic quickly became very popular among Sega fans and after the first game was released in 1991 many others soon followed – in fact since that first release Sonic games have sold over 70 million copies. This popularity in a niche industry at the time quickly made Sonic a video game here and he was inducted onto the “Wall of Game” along with Mario and Link (from the zelda games).
